Ethereum presale wallet recovery normally requires the original encrypted JSON backup and its password, or another valid backup of the private key. An email address or public Ethereum address cannot reset the encryption password.
What is an Ethereum presale wallet?
The 2014 ether sale used a password-encrypted wallet file. It is a different format from a modern BIP39 recovery phrase or a later Ethereum keystore. The Ethereum Foundation’s original presale explanation describes recovery using the wallet file and password.
Identify and preserve the backup
- Look for the original downloaded JSON file and copies on old computers, removable drives or archives.
- Keep an untouched original and work on a copy. Do not edit, rename fields inside or overwrite the only backup.
- Record the expected public Ethereum address and any known transaction history. These help verify the correct wallet.
The Go Ethereum presale implementation reads fields such as encseed and ethaddr, decrypts the seed using the supplied password and checks the resulting address. A file’s name alone does not establish its format or authenticity.
If you remember the password
Use a verified tool that explicitly supports the presale format in a controlled environment. Generic mnemonic import screens and modern keystore importers are not necessarily compatible. Confirm that the recovered address matches your records before moving funds.
If you forgot the password
A targeted password search may be possible if the encrypted file is intact and you remember useful constraints, such as likely words, approximate length, keyboard layout or substitutions. Keep candidate passwords private. A strong random password can make an exhaustive search impractical, and there is no guaranteed recovery time or success rate.
What will not recover a presale wallet?
- Email or phone password resets: these do not decrypt the original self-custody presale file.
- A public address alone: it shows blockchain activity but provides no signing key.
- Adding two-factor authentication: it does not change the encryption of an existing presale backup.
- A newly generated seed phrase: this creates a different wallet and does not recreate the presale key.
After access is restored
Verify the destination on a trusted device, make a small test transfer where appropriate, and account for transaction fees. If old key material may have been exposed, move remaining assets to a newly backed-up wallet. Keep the original evidence until you have checked all relevant assets and confirmed the new backup.
Can a lost JSON file be recovered?
Only if another usable copy, key backup or recoverable device data remains. Stop unnecessary writes to a drive that may hold a deleted file. File recovery is a separate problem from password recovery; neither can be promised in advance.
