Bitcoin wallet password recovery starts with identifying the wallet and preserving its backup. A forgotten local password, a missing seed phrase and a lost hardware-wallet passphrase are different problems.
Bitcoin Core wallet files
Bitcoin remains recorded on the blockchain; the wallet file stores keys and related wallet data. Preserve your original wallet.dat or wallet directory and work on a copy. A wallet is not necessarily encrypted, and a watch-only wallet may contain no spending keys.
If the relevant keys are encrypted, the password or another usable key backup is needed. Targeted candidate testing may help when meaningful password clues remain. Avoid treating every file as the same format; descriptor and legacy wallet types differ.
Electrum
A correct Electrum seed can restore its deterministic wallet with a new local password. Imported keys, watch-only files, multisignature setups and Lightning data need separate consideration. See the Electrum FAQ and our Electrum recovery guide.
Blockchain.com
Determine whether you have a recovery phrase, a legacy encrypted JSON file, an imported private key or a custodial account issue. A second password can protect older private keys separately. Account email recovery does not automatically decrypt self-custody keys. Read the Blockchain backup guide.
Hardware-wallet backups and passphrases
A device PIN and a wallet passphrase have different roles. A verified backup may restore accounts on another compatible device, but passphrase-protected accounts require the same passphrase. Never reset a device that might be your only working access route before confirming the complete backup.
For threshold backups, the scheme’s required shares must be available. A partial backup is not guaranteed to be enough.
What makes a password search useful?
Known components, length ranges, likely substitutions and keyboard-layout details can reduce the candidate set. Wallet-specific tools test those candidates against the actual backup. The BTCRecover documentation describes supported formats. There is no fixed success rate or reliable “minutes to days” promise without assessing the case.
What cannot be promised?
A public address can help identify transaction history but cannot reveal the private key. Strong random passwords may be impractical to search. Corrupt or overwritten key material may be unrecoverable. Recovering access also cannot reverse transfers already made to another party.
Before seeking help, record the wallet name, version, backup filenames and exact error. Keep secrets private, preserve originals and avoid unverified downloads.
Request a recovery assessment
Start with your wallet type, backup filenames and a description of the problem. Do not send passwords, seed phrases or private keys in your first message. Contact Wallet Recovery Service. Our fee is 20% of funds recovered; no recovery, no fee.
